A good cup of coffee in Sheffield

Writer: sandrasandra

If you’re wanting to grab a cup of coffee while out and about in the Steel City, why not try one of Sheffield’s many independent cafés? Many of them also offer a food menu so they make a perfect lunch spot or afternoon ‘light bite’.

Steam Yard

This café is situated in Aberdeen Court along the vibrant Division Street and definitely a favourite amongst Sheffield residents and visitors alike. The Steam Yard offers an impressive array of coffees and undoubtedly the most delicious selection of baked goods you will find within the city including a ‘cronut’ – an American doughnut/croissant fusion. Fear not those of you who crave something more on the savoury side because they’ve got you covered there too with an assortment of toasties, bagels, and flatbreads to enjoy. Not only are the food and drinks something to admire, but the décor makes the Steam Yard worth the trip on its own with the buildings industrial heritage being visible while embracing a relaxed coffee shop environment.

The Grind Café

Located in Kelham Island, an area in Sheffield filled with independently owned gems, The Grind Café remains one of the most popular destination for food and coffee. The breakfast menu various traditional dishes, like delicious fry-ups and various eggs dishes, while offering a couple of interesting ones such as a rarebit – definitely worth a try! The Grind Café also offers lunches, available for takeaway, that can be seen at the counter upon entering and can tempt anyone who enters feeling slightly hungry as they look too good not to eat! For those who have a sweet-tooth they also cater for you exceptionally well with an array of gorgeous cakes and baked goods to choose from.

Roco Creative Co-op

If you have a love of art and a love of drinks, this is the perfect space for you. Roco is a hidden gem in Sheffield, tucked into a row of fairly plain red-brick buildings on Glossop Road, but is worth making a trip to. This creative art space was part of a development project that includes exhibition spaces, a shop, a café bar, and a relaxing roof top terrace complete with its own micro greenhouse.

Five Rivers

Situated in Broomhill, this a very unique café in Sheffield due to its Vietnamese theme. Here, you can sip on the most amazing south-east Asian inspired coffees and indulge in delicious baguettes that cannot be bought elsewhere in the City. With some more extravagant drinks on offer on the menu, their most popular would be their Vietnamese filter coffee which can be served with normal milk or condensed milk – and I HIGHLY recommend the condensed milk! The atmosphere is a quite vibrant due to the colours and music played, and they offer both tabled seating and more relaxed floor seating area for the option of a more Vietnamese-style dining.
